Disposable gowns are part of the equipment used in clinics and hospitals. They are used to protect the person who carries it from viruses and bacteria from sick people, but also vice versa, to protect certain vulnerable patients from viruses and bacteria that may come from healthcare professionals. Disposable gowns are part of the equipment used to prevent the transmission of infections, both caused by coronaviruses and other pathogens.
There are several types of gowns:
– Protective gowns – protects the person who carries it from viruses or bacteria that can end up on clothes from the sick around.
–Chirurgical gown – also protects the wearer, but also the patient on the operating table. They are also sterile.
– Disposable gowns – are used only once and then discarded.
-Reusable gowns – which can be used several times after washing and disinfection.
Also, depending on the material from which they are made and its thickness, there are 4 types of gowns:
Protective Level 1 gowns – are used in situations with minimal risk of contamination and offer only a small barrier to protect against very small amounts of bodily fluids. They only need to pass a simple pre-production test, which checks how they are affected by water.
Protective Level 2 gowns – are used in low-risk contamination situations, such as when collecting blood, stitching or in certain laboratories. Provides better protection against bodily fluids that may contain viruses or bacteria. Before production, two tests are subjected to both water resistance and there sealing.
Protective Level 3 gowns – are used in situations with a moderate risk of contamination, such as when collecting arterial blood, applying infusions or in the Emergency Department.
Protective Level 4 gowns – are used in high-risk situations of contamination, during long and complex operations or when a contagious disease is suspected. Prevent bodily fluids from entering through them for a maximum period of one hour, but they also prevent viruses to enter through them. In addition to the tests mentioned at the previous levels, these gowns are also subjected to a test with a liquid containing a virus. If the virus does not pass through the material at the end of the test, then the robe is approved.
So the type of gown to choose depends on the environment in which it will be used by the medical staff.
