What’s the Best Coronavirus Mask?

The COVID-19 pandemic has already changed everyone’s lives, and protective masks have become a normal part of our daily lives. But what mask should we wear? Medicinal mask, cotton mask, N95 mask, FFP2 mask or protective visor? Keep reading to find out the answer.

Cotton Mask

Whether we are talking about cotton masks or other materials, scarves or bandanas, they offer the lowest level of protection. They are ok in crisis situations where no other type of mask is available, but they are not recommended for daily use, as the chances of infection are quite high. In addition, they must be changed very often and washed with hot water and soap after each use.

Medicinal Mask

They were already used by doctors in various situations even before the COVID pandemic, and offer a pretty good level of protection. They are made of a special material and besides they adapt to the shape of the face (compared to cotton masks that sit quite wide on the face, and leave gaps).

If a sick person sneezes or coughs, the medicinal mask stops most particles, but not completely. Medicinal masks should be changed very often (after 2-4 hours of use, depending on environmental conditions), and do not wash or reuse. After use, they should be disposed of safely.

Protective visor face shield

The individually used face visor face shield offers very low protection because of the large empty spaces that remain free underneath. Usually, visors are used in certain contagious environments, in addition to the medicinal mask or FFP2 / N95. They prevent particles from coughing or sneezing from getting into the eye, but more importantly, they prevent the wearer from putting his hand to his eye.

Even with a mask of the highest quality, the virus can be taken on the hands, and then enter the body when that person rubs his eyes. So a visor will prevent the person who’s going to do this, so it’ll reduce the chances of infection.

Mask FFP2 / N95 / KN95

Names vary depending on the area in which they are used, but the standards are similar, and masks provide similar protection. The FFP2 standard is for Europe, the N95 is for the United States and KN95 for Asia.

These masks protect against 95% of particles, and are very often used by medical personnel or those working in environments at high risk of infection. They are not necessarily necessary for the general population, but it is better to be safer and more protected than more exposed.

Mask FFP3 / N99

These masks provide the best protection and filter 99% of particles, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other dangerous particles from various fields. They are most recommended for healthcare professionals or those who interact directly with people with COVID-19.
